The "Africa Is..." concept is an evolving, ongoing effort that began with a visual exhibit. The idea was to ask random people to complete the phrase, "Africa is..." Over one hundred responses were collected and compiled, resulting in a list that will continue to drive the continuation of this concept.
The first exhibit was a response to Africa is...Beautiful, which photographically displayed numerous locations around Africa and the Diaspora that are...well, just beautiful. From the beach-front sand dune landscapes of Namibia, to the city skylines of Port Louis, Mauritius, Bogata, Colombia, and more, we sought to show what many never think of when they think of "Africa."
We, therefore, wanted to show that the Motherland and other areas where Black Africans and descendants reside, are much more than just rural settings for safaris, poor cities and towns, or undeveloped villages. Like every other country in the world, the nations of Africa and Her Diaspora are also thriving destinations of beauty and rich landscapes that should be recognized as such.
To continue promoting the positive aspects of Africa and her Diaspora, there are several programs and projects we are developing.... please stay tuned.
The National Endowment for the Arts defines Creative Placemaking as "getting artists and designers, community culture groups, arts research groups, cultural affairs offices, and arts organizations out of their silos and into the neighborhoods and regions around them."
Transportation for America says this: “(In the transportation context) creative placemaking is an approach that deeply engages the arts, culture, and creativity, especially from underrepresented communities, in planning and designing projects so that the resulting communities better reflect and celebrate local culture, heritage and values.”
Presently, there is a very special placemaking effort in the works.... click below to learn about the Jubilee Bridge Area Revitalization Project in North Nashville!
